Review Topic: Naturalization

On Monday 01/8/18 my husband had his citizenship test/interview in San Bernardino, CA. We arrived approximately 1 hour early so we went to get coffee at a nearby coffee shop and went over the civics questions one more time. When it was 30 minutes before his appointment, we entered the building. We went to airport type security (had us remove shoes, belts and went thru x-ray). The security agents were polite. They directed us to the elevators for the second floor.

On the second floor there is a hospital like lobby (lots of bench chairs) and a sign in reception desk area. The agent at the sign in desk took our appointment letter, time stamped it and asked him to have a seat and wait for his name to be called. The area was clean, semi-quiet with lots of nervous people waiting. I used the restroom which was also well kept. There were at least 20-25 officers (some friendly- laid back looking others more business like)coming out of 4 separate doors, going to the reception desk, pulling appointment letters from "cubby" sorters and calling out peoples names. They would then take the person/persons back for their interviews. the average a person was back there was between 15-30 minutes. We waited approx 30-45 minutes and then my husband was called back. Only he was allowed in the interview.

He later said that his interview agent was polite and to the point. He did not make small talk nor smile much but was respectful. After answering a few questions from his application, he was administered the civics, writing and written test and was then approved on the spot. the whole interview was about 15-20 minutes. He was given his oath ceremony letter at the interview- ceremony is next week 1/18/18.

i hope this review is of help, best wishes to all!

Review Topic: Adjustment of Status

Today I had my interview with my husband and we got approved on the spot!
We had our interview at 8:55am in San Bernardino Filed Office, but we got called by around 9:20am.

The officer is a very nice and professional man.
We first took the oath and the officer assigned us the seats.
Then he letted us to show our ID (my husband's passport + driver license, my passport + work permit + driving instruction permit).
I feel like other than identity verification, an another important thing the officer was looking for is our current address on them.

Then He took the picture again for me, I though it should be a very important picture so I just asked him if I can smile, he said yes. And I just gave the camera a big smile.
Then he asked us how we met? is this our first marriage? do we have kids? How long time we were dating each other before marriage?
In the same time he checked carefully our paperwork and signed or did a mark on different pages.

Then He asked us if we have any evidences to add? And we just put everything we had on the table (Originals + Copies): Joint names Bank Statements, Joint names Health Insurance card + medical bills, Joint car insurances, our photos of marriage, travels, families (but he didn't take any of our photos because he said we already submitted some in our original application package).

And then some questions in i-485: have you ever committed any crimes in the US? deportations? communists? No No No.

Then he just went out of the office to make the copies of our IDs.
When he came back, he took a hole on my work permit and gave me the approval letter and said congratulations and I was approved to be a permanent resident here!
I am happy and my husband was tearful at that time! lol after the interview he told me that the moment that he saw the the officer stamped approved on our paperwork, he was full of emotions. Finally we can book our flights for our next year travel in China!

In 4pm the same day of my interview, the online status changed to "new card is being produced"

My personal feelings:
The whole process was smooth and professional. Maybe our case is relatively simple: first marriage, no child, no any criminal records, and our bank statements + health insurances+ car insurances in hands. So it turns out to be much smoother.
So if your feel your case is complicate, be prepared for some more detailed questions, such as previous marriages, children, etc. Be prepared, not be anxious!

My personal suggestions:
1 Be well prepared, get all the evidences of your bona fide marriage to the interview. especially bank, health, cars, to show that you are really financially and physically attached to each other.
2 Tell the truth. It is very very important.
3 If you are a bona fide couples, try to be relaxed, I feel like a lot of officers have been working on this position for many years, if it is true, and your status is eligible, then you should not have a problem

Review Topic: Adjustment of Status

Our appointment was at 7:15am at the San Bernardino Field Office CA, we arrived at 6:45 but were let in at around 7.
We went through security (just like at the airport) and then up to the second floor.

They called our name at 7:40, the officer was extremely nice and we followed her to her office. She made me take an oath (not my husband, the USC)
She took my fingerprints again and a picture. Then proceeded to check both our birth certificates, marriage certificate, my passport.
She asked all the yes/no questions from the I-485, verified our address, asked about any children, about whether I was part of any organization, criminal records.
She asked how we met, where our first date was, how my parents felt about the wedding
Then, she asked for evidence of bonafide marriage. We gave her copies of bank statements, health and life insurance, car title and car insurance. She was happy that we had copies of everything but said she could have taken photocopies if we hadn't. She also asked about a lease agreement but my husband owns our house so it was ok not to have that.
After this, she asked about pictures. She was happy with our court house pictures, even though we had a "real/proper" wedding after (we had prepared a whole album) and photocopied them.

Laughingly said she didn't need to separate us and then proceeded to tell us we had been approved. She printed a letter confirming this and that in 90 days tops we should receive the card but that it usually takes about 3 weeks.

It sounds like a lot but we were out of the office by 8am. We were her first interview and she commented that she was happy to start her day on a happy note javascript:emoticon('')

Review Topic: Adjustment of Status

My husband's Green card was approved this morning. Here's the run-down of our experience.

Our appointment was at 8:05am and we arrived at 7:30am. On the notice it says not to arrive more than 30 minutes prior to the interview so we waited in the car for about 5 minutes before walking in. First thing you will do is to go through security. Just like at the airport, you have to remove large jewelry (watches, bracelets, etc., rings and earrings are ok to leave on), belts, jackets/coats and shoes. They have notices posted to have photo ID but no one ever checked. Security line was long when we first arrived (a few people outside the building) and it pretty much took about half an hour to get through. When we left (around 9am) there was no line.

We took the elevator to the second floor, deposited our interview notice in the box on the receptionist's desk and waited to be called. The wait was about 15 minutes. We had a pretty nice immigration officer. We took the oath and then she proceeded to ask questions. Here's a list of what was asked:

1. How did you meet? We met online so she asked for the name of the website.
2. How do you like California so far?
3. Who made first contact?
4. When did you meet in person and where?
5. What did you do on your first date/first meeting?
6. When did you get engaged?
7. Did you live together before getting married?

The whole interview was more conversational and she took notes of our answers. Since we filed for the K1 visa, she felt pretty confident that our marriage was legit so she approved us. She never asked for proof of joint assets/finances, photos, affidavits, etc. She only took copies of our original birth certificates and marriage certificate then gave us our letter of approval.

I'll add that she did mention her colleagues sometimes separate the couple and do individual interviews, just FYI.

All in all it was a pleasant experience.

Review Topic: Adjustment of Status

So finally the interview for AOS from K1 visa happened.

My local office was San Bernadino and I was surprised just how many people were being interviewed. We arrived with a good 30 minutes to spare, but despite there only being 6 or 7 people infront of us, going through security took a good 20 minutes of that time. Standard airport style but some people just slowed the process down for whatever reason.

Up to the second floor and we must have waited around 30 minutes. The interviewer was polite, but definitely serious, quite stern and had no room for small talk. We took the oath and he then asked me (the beneficiary) all the questions on the I-485. He then asked for any documentation we had. I handed over a couple of things (bank statement, phone bill and proof I was my husbands spouse per military ID.

He then asked my husband how we met and about 2 minutes in he told me to put all the paperwork away, took some photocopies of original birth certificates, marriage certificate and IDs and then told me I was approved subject to a further check. He was so serious though and he did it saying that it was not guaranteed, so I totally did not get that really it was done. I asked him what if his further check meant he would not approve me and he smiled (finally) and said - have you lied to me, are you a criminal? then I don't see a problem.

He then had some small talk about where we live etc so he relaxed a little as did we.

I got the text later that day to say approved and green card being produced.

Advice? - I would have your strongest paperwork of proof ready on top. I kind of wished I had given him other documents - I thought they were stronger, but in my anxiety I just passed the first thing I put my hands on to give him. I walked out thinking if I knew he'd only wanted 3 pieces of proof I kind of wished they were other documents.

But - no matter really as approved in the end.

Yes it is nerve wracking, but if you are genuine and honest, then you really shouldn't have a problem.

I did ask him for advice and recommendations for ROC. He said everything should have 2 names on it, everything intertwined, and each other be beneficiaries on wills, 401k, etc...

p.s in this venue sit near the reception desk to hear when called for interview. The interviewers just come into the room and call your name when ready and it can be hard to hear them. Especially as there are a couple of TVs on.

Good Luck!
